Specialised Acupuncture Treatment Areas

Women's Health

Women's health is a special focus of my practice. Through my training and personal interest in this area, I've developed expertise in using acupuncture to support women through all life stages and transitions.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a rich understanding of women's reproductive health, recognising the cyclical nature of hormones and the importance of maintaining balance throughout the menstrual cycle. My approach addresses not just the symptoms but the underlying patterns that may be affecting your reproductive and overall health.

The Science Behind Acupuncture for Women's Health

Modern research has validated many of the traditional uses of acupuncture for women's health. Studies show that acupuncture can:

  • Regulate the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis - This is the hormonal communication system that controls reproductive function. Acupuncture helps normalise hormone levels, including FSH, LH, oestrogen, and progesterone.
  • Improve Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs - Research demonstrates that acupuncture increases blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries, improving the thickness of the endometrial lining and supporting healthy egg development.
  • Reduce Stress Hormones - Clinical studies show acupuncture significantly reduces cortisol levels and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, creating optimal conditions for conception and reproductive health.
  • Support IVF Success Rates - Multiple systematic reviews indicate that acupuncture can improve IVF success rates when used in conjunction with fertility treatments.

Fertility and Reproductive Health

The World Health Organisation recognises acupuncture as effective for various reproductive health conditions. Research published in fertility journals shows that acupuncture can improve egg quality, regulate ovulation, and reduce inflammation in conditions like PCOS and endometriosis.

For women with diminished ovarian reserve, studies indicate that acupuncture may help improve AMH levels and antral follicle counts. In cases of recurrent miscarriage, acupuncture can help regulate immune function and improve blood flow to support healthy pregnancies.

I work closely with couples trying to conceive naturally as well as those undergoing assisted reproductive treatments like IVF. Many fertility clinics now recommend acupuncture alongside conventional treatments due to its ability to improve outcomes and reduce stress during what can be a challenging journey.

How Acupuncture Works for Hormonal Balance

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, women's health issues often stem from imbalances in kidney essence, blood stagnation, or disrupted Qi flow. Modern science helps us understand these concepts through measurable physiological changes.

Acupuncture influences the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and endorphins, which affect mood and pain perception. It also modulates the activity of the autonomic nervous system, helping to regulate sleep, digestion, and stress responses that are crucial for hormonal balance.

For conditions like PCOS, research shows acupuncture can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce androgen levels. In endometriosis, studies demonstrate that acupuncture can reduce inflammatory markers and pain levels while improving quality of life.

Understanding Your Unique Pattern

What sets my approach apart is the detailed assessment I undertake to understand your individual constitution and health pattern according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. This includes looking at your menstrual cycle, energy levels, sleep patterns, digestion, and emotional wellbeing to create a comprehensive picture of your health.

For women experiencing fertility challenges, I often incorporate lifestyle and nutritional guidance alongside acupuncture treatment. This evidence-based holistic approach addresses factors like stress management, sleep quality, and dietary choices that research shows can significantly impact reproductive health.

Supporting You Through Every Stage

Whether you're trying to conceive, managing difficult periods, navigating pregnancy, or transitioning through menopause, acupuncture offers gentle yet effective support backed by both ancient wisdom and modern research. The treatments are tailored to work with your body's natural rhythms and cycles, helping to restore balance and optimise your health at every stage of your reproductive journey.

Many women find that acupuncture not only helps with their specific concerns but also improves their overall sense of wellbeing, energy levels, and emotional balance—benefits that are supported by clinical studies measuring quality of life outcomes.

Pain Management

Acupuncture is widely recognised for its effectiveness in managing both acute and chronic pain. Whether you're suffering from back pain, headaches, arthritis, sports injuries, or other painful conditions, acupuncture offers a drug-free approach to relief.

The treatment works by stimulating the body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms, improving blood flow to injured areas, reducing inflammation, and releasing muscle tension. Many patients experience significant pain reduction after just a few sessions.

What makes my approach unique is that I focus on relieving pain regardless of its source, while also addressing the underlying imbalances that may be contributing to your discomfort. This dual approach helps prevent pain from recurring and supports long-term wellbeing.

Supporting Conception During Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer is a significant step in the IVF journey — a small procedure that carries enormous hope. Creating the right conditions for implantation is key, both physically and emotionally.

Acupuncture is commonly used alongside IVF to support the body during this important window. Treatment focuses on optimising the environment for conception and implantation by helping to:

  • Encourage healthy uterine blood flow
  • Support hormonal balance
  • Regulate the nervous system
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Promote a calm, receptive uterine environment

By supporting both body and mind, acupuncture works to help create the most favourable conditions possible at this crucial stage.

While no therapy can guarantee an outcome, acupuncture offers gentle, evidence-informed support to help optimise the conditions for conception and implantation.

Acupuncture for Labour Induction Support

As your due date approaches, it’s natural to hope labour will begin smoothly and in its own time. Acupuncture is often used in the later weeks of pregnancy to gently encourage the body’s readiness for birth.

Treatment is commonly used to help:

  • Encourage the natural onset of contractions
  • Support cervical ripening and dilation
  • Promote optimal baby positioning
  • Regulate hormonal signalling involved in labour
  • Calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety

By supporting both the physical and emotional aspects of late pregnancy, acupuncture offers a gentle, natural approach to preparing the body for

labour. While it cannot guarantee labour will begin, it can help create favourable conditions for birth.

Acupuncture for Breech Presentation

If a baby remains in a breech position later in pregnancy, acupuncture — often combined with moxibustion — is commonly used to encourage optimal positioning. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, treatment aims to support the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, helping to create warmth and movement within the uterus to encourage the baby to turn naturally.

Sessions focus on stimulating specific points that may help increase fetal activity and support a head-down position. Treatment is most often offered between 34–36 weeks, when there is still space for movement.

Acupuncture is a gentle, non-invasive approach and can be used alongside care from your midwife or consultant, ensuring you feel supported from all sides. While no approach can guarantee a change in position, it offers a calm and considered way to encourage your body’s natural processes.
